Mariners Oust Garver and Refsnyder, Elevate Ward and Pereda
Seattle released catcher Mitch Garver and outfielder Rob Refsnyder, replacing Garver with catcher Jhonny Pereda and Refsnyder with Taylor Ward, who was acquired in a trade the day before. Garver, 35, has struggled this season (.175/.302/.294 in 149 PA) and isn’t strong defensively, while Refsnyder, also 35, has hit just .140/.211/.254 in 2026 after a strong lefty season last year. Ward provides Seattle with an everyday left-handed bat, and Pereda, who hit well in the minors (.319/.402/.440 in Triple-A), will back up Cal Raleigh. Both players are now free agents after clearing waivers; the Mariners will cover the remaining salaries, and with the trade deadline past there are no further roster moves available for this season.
