Health-crisis release of former U.S. Marine from Russian prison
Former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman, jailed in Russia since 2022 for allegedly kicking a police officer on a Moscow train, was released on humanitarian grounds after his health deteriorated to a life-threatening condition. President Trump said Putin approved the release, and Gilman will be treated at a U.S. military hospital in Texas after arriving with his mother and doctors. His family and Sen. Ed Markey say he endured harsh confinement and abuse, including forced exercise, psychotropic drugs, and a feeding tube during a dissociative stupor; five other Americans remain in Russia with medical issues, and Gilman’s sentence had previously been increased to 10 years.
