Beheading of Rwandan Exile Robert Kabera in Uganda Raises Fears of State-Sponsored Assassination
Robert Kabera, a 50-year-old former Rwandan soldier and vocal critic of President Paul Kagame, was found beheaded in Mpigi District, Uganda, on October 17. While his body was identified by relatives, his head remains missing, and Ugandan police have not yet named suspects. The killing has intensified fears among exiled Rwandan dissidents, with the exiled Rwanda National Congress calling for a thorough investigation. Kabera had fled Rwanda in 2020 after denying sexual assault charges, seeking asylum in Uganda, where he maintained a popular YouTube channel criticizing the Rwandan government. His widow has expressed fear for her family's safety, and relatives have questioned the motive behind the decapitation. This incident follows a pattern of assassinations of Kagame's critics in exile, including Patrick Karegeya in 2014 and Revocat Karemangingo in 2021.
