Sea-crossing Chinese dissident detained in South Korea amid asylum questions
A 68-year-old Chinese dissident and former police officer, Dong Guangping, who has repeatedly fled China due to activism, reached South Korea after more than 30 hours at sea in a rubber boat and was rescued by the coast guard. He is now detained on immigration-violation charges and referred to prosecutors, with human rights groups urging Seoul to grant asylum or facilitate safe passage to Canada. The case underscores ongoing concerns about China's treatment of dissidents.
