Kern County urged to prep for multi-fault quakes as California faults stay stressed
CSUB associate professor Matthew Herman says the southern San Andreas and San Jacinto faults have built up high stress for more than 160 years, raising the risk of a large, multi‑fault earthquake. He warns residents to plan ahead and practice drop, cover and hold on during shaking, noting that even quakes far away can have a big local impact. Kern County has stronger building codes than decades ago, but preparedness remains essential.
