Quantum Frustration Unlocks New State of Matter for Physicists
Physicists have discovered a new phase of matter called the "chiral Bose-liquid state" by engineering a frustration machine: a bilayer semiconducting device. The novel chiral edge state has a number of surprising characteristics, including emergent charge-neutral particles that all either spin clockwise or counterclockwise. The chiral Bose-liquid state is difficult to observe, but the team of scientists successfully revealed the first piece of evidence using magneto-transport experiments.
