Iran says one person is dead after a ship strike near the Strait of Hormuz, as the Middle East remains volatile: Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have killed 1,369 Palestinians, and the report also notes Iraqi border crossings reopening after drone attacks, Egypt–Iran BRICS talks in New Delhi, and broader regional tensions.
Iran rejected Donald Trump’s claim that the Strait of Hormuz would become U.S. territory, saying the strait is Iranian and cannot be seized by tweets or warships, even as a bulk carrier was reportedly struck and talks with Tehran remain stalled; Tehran says there is no ceasefire and mediation is limited to Qatar and Pakistan, while the UK reports damage to a vessel and the U.S. continues sanctions and a hardline naval posture in the region.
A Royal Caribbean cruise ship arrived in Seward, Alaska, with a 61-foot pregnant female fin whale dead on its bow. NOAA Fisheries will conduct a necropsy with the Alaska SeaLife Center to determine the cause of death as authorities investigate possible vessel strikes; the incident has prompted calls from advocates for stronger protections, such as mandatory speed limits in whale hotspots.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, partially collapsed after being hit by a ship, prompting a search for at least seven people believed to be in the water. Emergency personnel, including firefighters and the U.S. Coast Guard, are on the scene, and the Interstate 695 has been shut down due to the collapse. The bridge, built in 1977, is over 8,500 feet long and spans the Patapsco River. This is a developing story.
