MicahJo Barnett, a junior running back for William Jewell College in Missouri, died after a medical emergency on the sideline during a game against Fort Lewis College. He had just scored a touchdown and finished the first quarter with six carries for 30 yards; the game was halted in the first quarter, and a vigil and condolences followed from the school.
The NFL will allow a head coach to designate a sideline staffer to initiate replay challenges starting in the 2026 season, with the designee chosen before kickoff; the coach remains heavily involved, and the change—not voted at the owners’ meeting—is codified in Rule 15.1(a). The Eagles’ season ended with a 23-19 wild-card loss to the 49ers as their offense stagnated (Jalen Hurts 168 yards, 1 TD; four third-down drops including two by A.J. Brown; missed extra point by Jake Elliott) and no second-half rhythm, culminating in a sideline confrontation between Brown and coach Nick Sirianni. Eagles head of security, Dom DiSandro, will not be allowed on the sideline for Sunday's game against the Cowboys as the NFL continues to investigate an incident between DiSandro and 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw. However, the team supports DiSandro and he will continue to fulfill his other job responsibilities. It is unclear if DiSandro will be allowed back on the sideline in the future.
San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks will move from the coaching booth to the sideline for the upcoming game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The change was made due to the team's struggles on defense, particularly in pass defense and run defense. The move is aimed at improving communication and making adjustments on the fly. Linebacker Fred Warner believes everyone could benefit from Wilks being on the sideline, as it allows for better interaction and leadership. The decision comes after Shanahan openly criticized Wilks for a failed blitz call in a previous game.
Matt Canada, the Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive coordinator, will be calling plays from the sidelines instead of the coaches' box in an effort to improve communication with head coach Mike Tomlin and the players. Canada has faced criticism for the team's offensive struggles, but Tomlin has resisted calls for his firing.
