Scientists from The University of Texas at Austin and New York Genome Center have used artificial intelligence to analyze X-ray images and genetic sequences, identifying the genes that shape our skeletal proportions. This groundbreaking research not only provides insights into our evolutionary history but also has implications for predicting the risk of musculoskeletal diseases such as arthritis and back pain. By examining 39,000 medical images and comparing them to genetic sequences, the researchers discovered 145 points in the genome that control skeletal proportions. The study also revealed associations between skeletal proportions and musculoskeletal diseases, highlighting the impact of biomechanical stresses on joint health. The findings offer a genetic roadmap for investigating skeletal development and provide a genomic rationale for the divergence in human skeletal anatomy.
