Google Messages is adding a new 'Tap to Draft' option that lets you edit Smart Reply suggestions before sending. After being tested as 'Tap to edit' and later renamed, the feature is now available in the latest stable Android build (version 20260522_00_RC00). However, people tend to evaluate others more negatively if they suspect that AI-generated “smart replies” are being used in the conversation. The study also found that smart replies led to faster communication, with 10.2% more messages sent per minute, and that the availability of negative smart replies caused conversations to have more negative emotional content than conversations with positive smart replies or no smart replies at all.
