"Newly Discovered Supernova Captivates Skywatchers Worldwide"
NASA has announced the discovery of a nearby supernova, SN 2023ifx, which was spotted in the Pinwheel Galaxy M101. The Virtual Telescope Project 2.0 will offer a livestream on its website and YouTube channel on Thursday night, allowing people to witness the celestial display for free. SN 2023ifx is the closest supernova seen in the past five years, the second closest in the past 10 years, and the second supernova found in M101 in the past 15 years. Observations indicate that it is a Type II supernova, which occurs after a massive star runs out of nuclear fuel and collapses.
