New Fathers, Preventable Deaths: A Hidden Public Health Crisis

Northwestern researchers linked Georgia birth records (2017–2022) with death data for 130,267 births, finding 796 fathers died within five years and 60% of these deaths were preventable (homicide, accidental injury, suicide, overdose). While being a father was associated with lower overall mortality for men over 20, younger fathers faced more non-natural deaths, and risks were higher for those with Medicaid-financed births, unmarried status, or rural residence; higher education, Hispanic ethnicity, and Tricare-linked births were protective. Published in JAMA Pediatrics, the study identifies a major public health blind spot—no systematic surveillance of paternal deaths after birth—and urges states to analyze their data and establish national monitoring (PRAMS for Dads).

Social Vulnerability Linked to Higher COVID-19 Rates in U.S. School Districts

A study has found that school districts with higher levels of social vulnerability are experiencing higher rates of SARS-CoV-2 transmission. The research suggests that factors such as poverty, lack of access to healthcare, and crowded living conditions contribute to the increased spread of the virus in these communities. This highlights the need for targeted interventions and support in order to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable school districts.

Study Finds Direct Link Between Social Vulnerability and Suicide Risk

A new study from the University of Chicago shows that social vulnerability is closely linked to higher suicide risk, with suicide rates nearly doubling between the least and most vulnerable counties. The study proposes several public health and economic policies that could reduce suicide rates by targeting social vulnerability in communities, such as improving access to mental health services and quality healthcare, and building stronger social networks. The research emphasizes the importance of targeted interventions to communities at higher risk and highlights the need to address social and economic disparities to prevent needless deaths.

Frailty in Older Adults Linked to Health Risks and Parkinson's Disease.

Social frailty, a set of vulnerabilities that include a lack of close relationships, inability to rely on others for help, and low activity in community groups, has been linked to poor health outcomes in older adults. Experts are calling for a more complete picture of older adults' circumstances, including social determinants of health, to help clinicians identify socially frail patients and prompt problem-solving to help them cope with various challenges. A social frailty index has been developed to identify older adults who need extra assistance and direct them to community resources. Oak Street Health, a chain of primary care centers for older adults, is trying to address social frailty by regularly screening patients for extra needs and providing individual wellness plans that include social as well as medical priorities.
