Capturing the Eclipse: Phone Photography Tips

University of Colorado astronomer Doug Duncan advises against using your phone's camera to take pictures of an eclipse without proper protection, as the concentrated sunlight can damage the lens. Duncan has developed a product called Solar Snap, which includes a filter that can be attached to a phone's camera to capture eclipse photos safely. He also warns against using eclipse glasses or sunglasses, as they may not provide adequate protection. Fake eclipse glasses are also a concern, as they can pose a risk to eye safety.

On October 14, an annular solar eclipse will be visible from Oregon to Texas, including San Antonio. To safely capture photos of the eclipse using a smartphone, experts recommend using a filter called the Solar Snap, developed by astronomer Doug Duncan and John Jerit. The Solar Snap attaches to the phone's camera and comes with glasses for eye protection. Regular sunglasses are not safe for viewing eclipses. The same glasses and filters can be used for the total eclipse on April 8, 2024.
