Ukraine's War Endangers Britain's Steam Engines.

The war in Ukraine has caused a surge in coal prices, which is threatening the future of Britain's heritage railway lines powered by coal, fire, and steam. Rising costs, including those of coal, are impacting customers, but railways are trying to absorb the hit and not raise ticket prices. The railways insist they're using cleaner coal where possible and are trying to reduce their carbon footprint elsewhere. The hope is that more passengers will turn up for a steam fix to help the railways survive.

Steam locomotive extinction challenges evolutionary assumptions, says researcher.

A paleontologist at the University of Kansas has used the history of steam engines to test the merits of "competitive exclusion," a long-held idea in paleontology that species can drive other species to extinction through competition. The researchers found the fossil record largely lacks the detailed data verifying competitive exclusion found in the history of steam engines. The study suggests extinction can be tied directly to competition between species only under specific circumstances "when niche overlap between an incumbent and its competitors is near absolute and where the incumbent is incapable of transitioning to a new adaptive zone."
