Pope Leo XIV Discharged After Routine Lung Cancer Surgery; Surgeon Clears Him for November Trip
Pope Leo XIV was discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on October 17, four days after undergoing routine surgery to remove a lung adenocarcinoma tumor. His surgeon, Professor Stefano Margaritora, confirmed the procedure was uncomplicated and that the 71-year-old pontiff is an 'ideal patient' who requires only about ten more days for full recovery. The cancer was discovered accidentally during routine abdominal exams, not through preventive screening. Margaritora stated there are no clinical reasons to cancel the Pope’s planned November 6–17 trip to Latin America.
