Scientists have identified a desert near the Andes in northern Chile as the sunniest place on Earth. The Chajnantor Plateau, located in the Atacama Desert, experiences intense bursts of sunlight due to a phenomenon called "forward scattering" among thin clouds. The plateau has the highest level of horizontal shortwave radiation worldwide and is considered to have solar extremes that are unparalleled globally. The extreme conditions make it unsuitable for sunbathing, with temperatures just above 39.2°F (4°C) during the summer. However, the area could be a potential location for solar plants in the future.
