SVB Capital, a subsidiary of Silicon Valley Bank, is up for sale, putting its ownership stakes in some of tech’s best-known venture capital firms, including Accel, Andreessen Horowitz, Index Ventures, and Sequoia, in flux. Venture capital firms typically control who can invest in their funds, but unless the firms held an unusual provision in their agreements with SVB that would give them more say in the sale process, they won’t have the ability to block a sale of the SVB’s venture portfolio as a whole. The sale of such startup stakes from one investor to another is relatively straightforward.

SVB Financial Group Files for Bankruptcy Protection to Reorganize and Preserve Value

SVB Financial Group has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to preserve value and explore strategic alternatives for its businesses and assets, including SVB Capital and SVB Securities. However, SVB Securities and SVB Capital's funds and general partner entities are not included in the filing and will continue to operate in the ordinary course. The company believes it has approximately $2.2 billion of liquidity and is exploring strategic alternatives for its other valuable investment securities accounts and assets.
