Habibi City debate: NY Magazine's SWANA spotlight sparks identity backlash
New York Magazine's Habibi City package on New York's SWANA cultural scene drew backlash for allegedly erasing Jewish/Israeli identity by linking Zionism with xenophobia and Islamophobia and using phrasing like 'the land mass currently called Israel'; supporters say the feature highlights a rising regional culture, while critics—including advocacy groups and scholars—call it a harmful redefinition of identity; the magazine defends the reporting as exploring tensions within communities and invites ongoing discussion.
