Jet chase captures ESA satellites’ fiery reentry to study atmospheric fallout
An international team tracked ESA's Tango and Samba satellites as they reentered Earth's atmosphere, observing from a private jet equipped with cameras and spectrometers to study how debris breaks up and burns up. The Aug. 31–Sept. 1 observations over the southern Pacific near Tonga captured detailed fragmentation and spectral signatures of metals released, including aluminum oxide, with implications for atmospheric chemistry and potential ozone impacts, helping validate models as the space‑to‑Earth debris footprint grows.
