
MIT tests magnetic data link under Arctic ice during Ice Camp 2026
MIT Lincoln Laboratory demonstrated a magneto-inductive modem to send data from beneath 3.6 feet of Arctic sea ice to an above-ice receiver during Operation Ice Camp 2026, achieving about 1.2 kilobytes per second. The effort aims to enable long-running underwater sensor networks with minimal fieldwork on ice, potentially via drones or satellites for data relay, though the campaign was hampered by blizzards and severe weather.
