Whole Foods Market has leased the long-vacant Treasure Island space at 1639 N. Wells St. in Old Town and will move forward with design, permitting and construction; an opening date hasn’t been announced. The move comes after years of effort to bring a grocery store back to the site, including prior talks with Commissary Market and redevelopment negotiations that tied the outcome to securing a grocery tenant.
San Francisco police found the submerged wreckage of the Volare, a 49-foot cabin cruiser that sank in SF Bay with about 20 people aboard while they were scattering ashes. The body of Tondra Madruga, 58, was recovered and identified. One other person died during rescue, and two—Carol and Jackie Boisa—remain missing. The wreck sits about 120 feet deep near Treasure Island and is being assessed by an ROV after initial sonar searches, as the Coast Guard had previously scoured roughly 800 square miles looking for more victims.
French studio Savage Level is set to release a new turn-based RPG game, Flint: Treasure of Oblivion, inspired by the pirate world of Treasure Island and Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, featuring a deep story, isometric exploration, and BG3-style combat. San Francisco's first driverless shuttle, part of a free and fully electric autonomous shuttle service called "the Loop," has begun offering public rides on Treasure Island. However, despite being touted as driverless, the shuttle still requires a safety operator to take control in various situations, such as encountering emergency vehicles or aligning with the curb. Riders have reported frequent and jolting stops, with the shuttle sometimes mistaking shadows for obstacles and abruptly slamming on the brakes. The service aims to improve transit on the island, which currently has limited options, but some residents remain skeptical about its usefulness.
