General Motors (GM) has released its Q3 delivery numbers, with EV sales showing growth, particularly in the Ultium lineup. The Cadillac Lyriq and Hummer EV saw significant increases in deliveries, indicating that GM may finally be making progress with Ultium. The Bolt remains the top-selling EV for GM, despite being discontinued at the end of the year. However, overall EV sales still represent a small percentage of GM's total sales. GM delivered 20,092 EVs in Q3, accounting for just under 3% of its total deliveries. GM will need to significantly increase EV production to fulfill its promise of being "all-in" on EVs.
General Motors CEO Mary Barra announced that the company will end production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV by the end of this year, despite the vehicle's recent success and increased production. GM is focusing on profitable electric vehicles and aims to deliver single-digit profits off its EV portfolio by 2025, when it plans to have a production capacity of 1 million electric vehicles in North America. The company's next-generation EVs, built on a new architecture known as Ultium, are expected to be profitable, unlike the Bolt models. GM will replace the Bolt with the upcoming Equinox EV, starting at around $30,000.
General Motors has confirmed that it will end production of the Chevrolet Bolt hatchback and its crossover Bolt EUV sibling this year. The Bolt was the cheapest way to get into a new EV in the United States, starting at just under $27,000 before federal and state electric vehicle incentives. The next cheapest electric car on sale is the Nissan Leaf S, which has an EPA-estimated range of 149 miles on a charge. The Bolt was also the best selling non-Tesla EV in the last two quarters of 2022.
General Motors plans to stop production of the Chevy Bolt EV and EUV by the end of 2023 due to the models' battery cells being based on an older design. GM will modify a Detroit-area plant to produce the electric Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra starting in 2024. The company plans to switch entirely to EVs by 2035 and use the same battery tech across all models to ramp up production. The move may be risky as the Bolt is the most affordable option for a new EV from a major automaker. GM delivered over 20,000 EVs last quarter, far behind Tesla's 422,000 vehicles in Q1.

The Bolt is one of the cheapest EVs currently on the market, with a starting price of around $24,000, but it was built on GM's older BEV2 platform. Chevy is planning to launch a trio of Ultium-built EVs, including the Silverado EV, Blazer EV, and Equinox EV.
