Roland Garros Fines Vallejo $65K for Sexist Umpire Remark
Paraguayan tennis player Adolfo Daniel Vallejo was fined $65,000 at the French Open after insulting a female chair umpire, saying matches should be officiated by a man. Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo called the remarks unacceptable and docked half of Vallejo’s prize earnings after his loss to 17-year-old Moise Kouame; second-round prize money at Roland Garros is about $151,000, making the fine nearly half that amount.
