Sony's $7.9 Billion Lawsuit: Alleged Abuse of Market Position in PlayStation Store Pricing
Sony has been ordered by a London tribunal to face a mass lawsuit worth up to $7.9 billion over allegations that the company abused its dominant position, resulting in unfair prices for customers on its PlayStation Store. The lawsuit, brought on behalf of nearly nine million people in the UK, claims that Sony's requirement for digital games and add-ons to be exclusively bought and sold through the PlayStation Store, which charges a 30% commission, has led to higher prices for consumers. The Competition Appeal Tribunal ruled that the case can proceed, excluding those who made purchases after the lawsuit was filed in 2022. Consumer advocate Alex Neill, who is leading the case, sees this ruling as a step towards ensuring consumers receive proper compensation. Sony has yet to comment on the ruling.
