UFT files motion to intervene as Mamdani sues to block NYC paraprofessional bonuses
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has sued to block the RESPECT Check Act, a unanimous City Council measure granting $10,000 bonuses to education paraprofessionals. The United Federation of Teachers (UFT), which previously endorsed Mamdani, has filed a motion to intervene in the lawsuit. While Mamdani argues the bill violates the state Taylor Law regarding collective bargaining, the UFT and City Council maintain the legislation is legal and necessary to address staffing shortages and low wages.
