UMG and Sony File Second Suit Against Suno, Alleging V6 Models Infringe via 'Poisoned Tree' Training
Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment have filed a second lawsuit against AI music platform Suno in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. The complaint alleges that Suno's new v6 models, launched on September 9, infringe on 60,202 copyrighted sound recordings by training on outputs from previous models that were built on unlicensed data. The labels argue that training new models on infringing outputs 'launders' the infringement rather than eliminating it. Suno counters that v6 was trained on licensed content from partners like Warner Music Group and BMG, as well as user-generated data, and rejects the claims as legally flawed. The labels seek statutory damages, which could theoretically reach over $9 billion, and an injunction against further use of their recordings.
