Base Power raises $1B to scale its giant Core home battery

Base Power raised $1 billion in a Series D to expand Core, a 39.2 kWh home battery that can back up a house for up to 72 hours with two units, installs in under an hour, and can operate with solar or be recharged from a portable generator; the battery is sold through a Base plan (not owned outright) and participates in a growing virtual power plant to support the grid. The company has rolled Core out in Texas and Illinois and plans nationwide expansion, backed by investors including Ribbit, Addition, Valor Equity Partners, and JPMorgan Chase’s Strategic Investment Group.

Home Batteries to Power AI Data Centers: 16 GW VPP Push by Tesla, Sunrun, Renew Home

Tesla, Sunrun, and Renew Home unveiled a plan to pool hundreds of thousands of home batteries, smart thermostats, and other devices into a 16 GW virtual power plant to serve data centers, with about 300 MW deployable today in Virginia and potential growth in PJM; the 16 GW figure is a theoretical capacity and real deployment will depend on enrollments, utility approvals, and signed commitments, but the approach seeks to curb peak-grid costs by leveraging existing assets instead of new infrastructure.
