Improving Career Outcomes for Psychosis Patients: Rethinking Early Intervention Programs

A study published in the Community Mental Health Journal reveals that individuals who received early intervention in psychosis services (EIS) faced significant challenges in finding and maintaining employment. The research found that many participants experienced unemployment or low-wage, short-term jobs, with EIS prioritizing quick placement in low-wage positions over career development. Participants also reported derailment of their vocational paths following the onset of psychosis, including loss of jobs and dismissal from educational programs. The study highlights the need for improved career development support and access to postsecondary education and training within EIS to promote long-term socioeconomic mobility for individuals with psychosis.
