Chrome 113 introduces WebGPU API for enhanced web graphics and gaming.

Google has announced that it will enable WebGPU support in its Chrome browser by default starting in version 113, currently in beta. WebGPU is a next-generation graphics API that aims to bring the benefits of low-overhead APIs like Microsoft's Direct3D 12, Apple's Metal, and Vulkan to web browsers and other apps. Once Safari and Firefox add support, virtually all web browsers everywhere will be able to run WebGPU code.

Google's WebGPU API brings next-gen graphics to Chrome for gaming and beyond.

Google is introducing WebGPU, a new feature that will allow Chrome browsers to use graphics cards to accelerate games, graphics, and machine learning. WebGPU will give web apps better access to graphics cards, allowing developers to achieve the same level of graphics with less code. The feature will be enabled by default in Chrome 113 for Windows PCs, MacOS, and ChromeOS. The API has been in development for over six years and should be available to Firefox and Safari in the future.

Chrome introduces WebGPU API for enhanced web graphics and gaming.

WebGPU, a new web graphics API, is coming to Chrome and other browsers on desktop and mobile platforms. It allows developers and apps to access more advanced GPU features and provides first-class support for general computations on the GPU, resulting in a 3x improvement in machine learning model inferences. WebGPU will greatly reduce JavaScript workload for the same graphics and enable newer game engines to expose more advanced rendering features. It will first be available in Chrome 113 and later on Android and Linux, while Safari and Firefox also plan to support it.

Google has announced that WebGPU, an API that gives web apps more access to your graphics card’s capabilities, will be enabled by default in Chrome 113, which is due out in around three weeks. WebGPU can let developers achieve the same level of graphics they can now with far less code and provides “more than three times improvements in machine learning model inferences.” It could also let developers write better-looking games for your browser. The API has been in the works since 2017 and will be available in Firefox and Safari as well.
