USDA rolls out Southeast rabies vaccine bait drops to curb raccoon outbreaks
The U.S. Department of Agriculture will distribute millions of oral rabies vaccine baits across parts of the Southeast this October to form a barrier against raccoon rabies, with projects in Abingdon, VA; Andrews, NC; Dalton, GA; and Gadsden, AL distributing hundreds of thousands of baits by air, helicopter, and land. The baits are safe for dogs and cats; South Carolina is not included in this round as the barrier is planned to move eastward in coming years. The aim is to slow or prevent westward spread of raccoon rabies as the program expands.
