Unlocking the Potential of Wood: Enhancing Biomass Conversion through Polymer Modification
Scientists have successfully integrated callose, a naturally-occurring polymer, into the wood of trees, making it more porous and easier to convert into simpler building blocks. The callose-enriched wood showed increased hygroscopicity and porosity, making it more accessible for extracting sugars and bioethanol. This research opens up possibilities for more efficient biomass conversion and the production of sustainable materials and renewable energy. Field trials are planned to confirm the findings and assess the performance of callose-enriched trees under real forestry conditions.
