Maltese Jury Acquits Tycoon in Landmark Journalist Murder Trial
Yorgen Fenech, a Maltese tycoon accused of orchestrating the 2017 car-bomb murder of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, has been acquitted by a jury. The verdict, reached after eight hours of deliberation, split 8-1 in favor of Fenech, sparking outrage from the journalist’s family and international press freedom groups. While five individuals have already been convicted for their roles in the killing, the acquittal leaves the identity of the mastermind unresolved and highlights ongoing concerns about institutional failures in Malta.
