China's Push for Homegrown AI with Socialist Values and Security Assessments

Chinese officials have published draft guidelines for regulating generative AI, stating that it should reflect the core values of socialism and not attempt to subvert state power or undermine national unity. The guidelines also prohibit promoting terrorism, extremism, or ethnic hatred, distributing false information, or disrupting economic and social order. China plans to conduct security reviews of generative AI services before allowing them to widely launch in the country. The move comes as Chinese firms develop homegrown alternatives to OpenAI's ChatGPT, and tensions with the US over access to powerful technologies like high-end semiconductors needed to train AI systems continue to mount.
