Two AA2482 Flights Share Callsign on the Same Phoenix Frequency

Two American Airlines flights using the same callsign AA2482 ended up on the same Phoenix air traffic control frequency at roughly the same time, effectively heading toward each other. The outbound ORD–PHX leg and the return PHX–ORD leg were operated by possibly different aircraft, and while callsigns are usually unique, operators can reuse flight numbers; it’s unclear who should enforce distinct callsigns. The Phoenix controller calmly clarified the situation as both crews paid extra attention.
