Global Efforts to Phase Out Coal Undermined by China's Coal Boom.

China is planning to build 366 GW of new coal generation capacity, accounting for 68% of global planned new coal capacity as of 2022, according to a report by climate think tank Global Energy Monitor. While the rest of the world saw its coal capacity decrease by 20% to 172 GW, there are increases across other countries such as India, Turkey, and Indonesia. The report warns that the global pace of retirements needs to move four and a half times faster to phase out coal power by 2040, as required to meet the goals of the Paris climate agreement.
