Fossil fuels maintain dominance despite record renewables growth in 2022.

Carbon dioxide emissions from the energy sector, industrial processes, flaring, and methane reached a new high in 2022, growing 0.8 percent, according to the Energy Institute's Statistical Review of World Energy. Fossil fuels remain dominant at 82 percent of consumption, despite a strong showing from renewables. Wind and solar power together hit a record 12 percent of total electricity generation. The Energy Institute warned that the sector was heading in the "opposite direction" to the goals of the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit the increase in global temperatures to 1.5 degrees of pre-industrial levels.
