Global Shift: Buyers Opt for Larger Cars, Undermining Progress in Clean Technology. Electric Vehicles Offer a Solution.

The increasing global demand for larger cars, particularly SUVs, has offset the progress made in reducing carbon emissions from passenger vehicles over the past decade, according to a report by the Global Fuel Economy Initiative. SUVs now account for over half of all new car sales worldwide, contributing significantly to carbon dioxide emissions. The negative environmental impact could have been reduced by more than one-third if consumers had continued buying the same size cars. Electric vehicles (EVs) could help mitigate this issue, but their adoption remains relatively low, especially in the US. Efforts are underway to improve fuel economy and emissions from gas-powered vehicles, but the industry is also exploring ways to reduce the size and weight of EV batteries to enhance their efficiency and environmental impact.
