93% of CEOs are preparing for a recession over the next 12 to 18 months, according to a recent survey from the Conference Board. Although economists peg the odds of a recession occurring in the next 12 months at 61%, the S&P 500 index is up more than 10% so far in 2023. The mixed signals can be chalked up to what economists describe as "rolling recessions." Experts recommend focusing on high-quality companies with strong balance sheets and ample cash flow to fund operations without taking on debt, as well as debt with high credit ratings that are unlikely to default.
