FDA Approves New Covid Vaccine Boosters from Pfizer and Moderna, UK Regulator Also Gives Green Light

The FDA has approved a reformulated coronavirus vaccine targeting the omicron subvariant, manufactured by Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech, for individuals aged 6 months and older. If the CDC signs off on Tuesday, the shots could be available by the end of the week. The CDC is leaning towards a broad recommendation covering almost all ages, but some experts may push for a targeted recommendation for high-risk groups. The new vaccine is part of a revamped arsenal of protections against COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) as the weather turns cooler. COVID-19 cases are increasing, but remain lower than previous peaks. Experts recommend getting the vaccine, but anticipate a lower uptake compared to previous boosters. The new vaccine is designed to protect against the omicron variant and related variants, including the highly mutated BA.2.86 variant. Novavax has also applied for FDA clearance for an updated vaccine.
