A deadly strain of bird flu, H5 subtype of avian influenza, has been found on mainland Antarctica for the first time, raising concerns over the risk of mass mortality of the continent’s penguin colonies and other unique wildlife. The virus threatens to upend ecosystems and edge endangered birds closer to extinction, posing a high economic cost for farms as it kills millions of poultry birds. Penguins on Antarctica may be particularly vulnerable as rising temperatures deplete their sea ice habitat, and the virus has not been documented on the continent until now.
