A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveals that the average liter of bottled water contains about 240,000 microscopic plastic particles, most of which are "nanoplastics." These tiny plastic particles, measuring less than one micrometer, are also found in tap water but in smaller amounts. Scientists are concerned about the potential health implications of nanoplastics, as they are smaller and likely to appear in larger quantities than microplastics. While the World Health Organization has stated there isn't enough firm evidence linking microplastics in water to human health, there is an urgent need for further research.
