Microplastics Uncovered in Human Hearts, Raising Health Concerns

Microplastics have been discovered in human heart tissue for the first time, according to a study conducted in China. Researchers found tens to thousands of individual microplastic pieces in cardiac tissue samples taken from patients undergoing heart surgery. The study also revealed that microplastics were present in the patients' blood samples both before and after surgery, suggesting that some microplastics were already embedded in the tissues. The types of plastic found included poly(methyl methacrylate), polyethylene terephthalate, and polyvinyl chloride. The long-term effects of microplastics on cardiac health are still unknown, highlighting the need for further research.
