AI Chatbots: Boosting Physical Activity, Diet, Sleep Quality, and Detecting Distress in Overburdened Hospital Workers

AI-powered chatbots have been found to be effective in improving physical activity, diet, and sleep quality, according to a study published in npj Digital Medicine. The research involved a systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 trials, which showed that chatbot interventions led to small-to-moderate improvements in these lifestyle behaviors. Participants who interacted with chatbots took an additional 735 steps per day, incorporated an extra serving of fruits and vegetables into their diet, and enjoyed an extra 45 minutes of sleep each night. Text-based chatbots were found to be more effective than voice-based alternatives, highlighting the importance of tailoring chatbot interventions to specific health goals. However, caution should be exercised, and chatbots should be supplemented with human coaching to ensure appropriate advice. Future research should focus on larger sample sizes, longer-term follow-up studies, and exploring the sustainability of chatbot interventions.
