Virginia wildlife grapples with deadly deer hemorrhagic disease outbreak

The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources reports an outbreak of Deer Hemorrhagic Disease in the state. The disease is deadly to deer but poses no threat to humans. Infected deer are often found near water and show fever and dehydration, driving them to drink. It is spread by bites from gnats and midges and typically wanes as cooler weather kills these insects. There is no cure, but wildlife managers monitor affected areas to track the outbreak.
