Minneapolis City Council Approves Minimum Wage and Protections for Rideshare Drivers

The Minneapolis City Council has passed an ordinance establishing a minimum wage for rideshare drivers, despite threats from Uber and Lyft to withdraw their services from the city. The proposal sets a minimum wage equivalent to the city's minimum wage at $15.19, with drivers earning at least $1.40 per mile and $0.51 per minute, or $5, whichever is greater. The ordinance also includes new rules on driver discipline, termination, and deactivation, as well as greater employment protections and the right to challenge deactivation. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has expressed concerns about the ordinance but has not indicated whether he will veto it.
