House OKs $1.15T Defense Bill in Narrow, Partisan Vote

The House narrowly approved its fiscal 2027 National Defense Authorization Act, a roughly $1.15 trillion Pentagon budget, by a 216-212 vote with a handful of cross-party votes. The package would authorize a 5%–7% troop pay raise, grow the active-duty force, and include a provision to rename nine southern bases back to their pre-Confederate names, along with a plan to rename the Department of Defense as the Department of War. It comes amid partisan dispute over the Iran conflict and U.S. debt, with opponents criticizing the cost and supporters arguing the NDAA is essential must-pass legislation.
