2024 Cicada Emergence: Where and When to Find Them

In 2024, two broods of cicadas, Brood XIX and Brood XIII, are expected to emerge in 17 states, including Maryland and Virginia, for the first time in 221 years. The cicadas are anticipated to emerge in mid-May and stay through late June, with overlapping areas experiencing incredibly high densities. Residents in specific counties in Maryland and Virginia may encounter them, but they are not expected to emerge in the immediate Washington, D.C. area. The cicadas do not bite or sting, and while they may cause some tree damage, they are not harmful. Entomologists advise against stepping on them and suggest enjoying the phenomenon as the cicadas will be gone in about four weeks.
