Chicago Implements Measures to Combat Flash Flooding and Protect Lake Michigan

Officials in Chicago have reversed the flow of the Chicago River into Lake Michigan to alleviate flooding caused by heavy rainfall. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District made the decision after up to four inches of rain fell in some areas over the past two days. The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the North Branch of the Chicago River, and several beaches have been closed due to poor water quality conditions. Releasing floodwater into the lake is rare and is done to prevent sewage and pollutants from entering Lake Michigan.
