Invasive "Earthworms on Steroids" Spotted in Door County

Invasive jumping worms, also known as "earthworms on steroids," have been found in at least 34 states, including recent reports in Wisconsin. These worms move like snakes, jump into the air, and shed their tails to escape. They eat organic matter in soil, leaving behind waste that alters soil composition and makes it inhospitable for native plants. The worms also accumulate toxic metals, which can negatively impact birds that feed on them. There are currently no official methods to control or prevent jumping worms, but individuals are encouraged to educate themselves, clean soil and debris when moving it, and purchase plants and gardening materials believed to be jumping worm-free. If found, the worms should be removed and destroyed.
