The United States experiences more frequent and severe extreme weather events than any other country due to its unique geography, including two oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, the Rocky Mountains, and jutting peninsulas. Climate change exacerbates the situation, and people have made it worse by building in hazard-prone areas with minimal construction standards. Poverty also makes it difficult to prepare for and recover from disasters, especially in the South. The U.S. must take steps to make communities more resilient and infrastructure more climate-resilient.
